Communication Skills

While leaving a Wal-Mart store I was approached by a well spoken young African American lady that ask me to contribute to a fund that would help in the search for missing children. The "missing children fund" sounded like a scam to me but something that did impress me was the communication skills of the African American lady. I instantly knew that this young lady was not from Memphis. Would you like to know how I knew this? It was the way that she annunciated her words. It turns out that my assumption about where she was from was right. This young lady was from New York city.
The great thing about the Liberty that we enjoy in this country is that you can make as much or as little of yourself as you choose.There is no doubt in my mind that this young lady from New York can succeed in whatever she chooses to succeed in because of just the fact that she has great communication skills. I knew this because she " don't be talking like she from around here"!
When the current School Board of the Memphis City Schools continues to ignore the poor communication skills of the MCS students, they are sealing the fate of our young citizens. They will be stuck with low paying jobs simply because they cannot communicate in the world outside of their local African American community.This is not fair to them and it damn sure isn't far to the whole of Memphis! If we continue on this path there will be no way to lower the crime rate or the welfare lines in our city.
